NICKI BLOOM’s plays include Tender, Bloodwood, The Sun and the Other Stars, A Cathedral, Land & Sea, Little Birdand Vale. Her adaptations include Ibsen’s Ghosts, Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Oscar Wilde’s The Young King and Erich Kastner’s Emil and the Detectives. Her plays have been performed by companies around the country and internationally, including State Theatre Company of South Australia, Belvoir, Griffin, Arts Centre Melbourne, Brink, Hothouse Theatre, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Slingsby, NIDA, The New Victory Theatre, New York City and the Public Theatre, New York. Bloom was a resident writer at Griffin Theatre Company in 2008, and has been the recipient of two Goethe-Institut scholarships, one of them to attend the 2009 Theatertreffen International Forum in Berlin. Bloom’s many playwriting awards include the 2006 Adrian Consett Stephen Memorial Prize (Tender); the 2007 Inscription Chairman’s Award for Best Play (Tender); the 2008 Patrick White Playwrights’ Award (Bloodwood); the 2009 Inscription Playwriting Award (Bloodwood); the 2012 Jill Blewett Playwrights’ Award (A Cathedral); the 2012 Barbara Hanrahan Fellowship (The Sun and the Other Stars) and the 2015 AWGIE for Best Writing for Music Theatre for Little Bird. She was also awarded the Henry Lawson Prize for Prose. Bloom’s short stories have been published in The Canary Press and she is currently working working on a new novel. Vale closed the 2017 Season for State Theatre Company of South Australia and The Young King continues to tour both nationally and internationally.
