VERSION 1.0 is a Sydney-based group of artists who make devised performances that are both political and intensely personal, based on strong research, and that engage with significant political and social issues using innovative theatrical strategies. version 1.0 is acclaimed in Australia for its innovative, accessible and entertaining blend of documentary theatre, contemporary performance, and media spectacle. Previous performance works include The Disappearances Project, The Table of Knowledge, the Green Room Award-winning The Bougainville Photoplay Project, A Distressing Scenario, seven kilometres north-east, the Helpmann Award-winning THIS KIND OF RUCKUS, the Drover’s Award-winning Deeply Offensive and Utterly Untrue, The Wages of Spin, CMI (A Certain Maritime Incident), From a Distance and The Second Last Supper. Founded in 1998, version 1.0 was granted Key Organisation status by the Theatre Board of the Australia Council in 2009. Its team is made up of Dr David Williams as CEO, Jocelyn Payne as general manager, Sandy Collins as producer, Cara Anderson as development manager, Emma Bedford as production manager, Rebecca Saffir as media and marketing officer, and Sean Bacon, Irving Gregory, Jane Phegan, Paul Prestipino, Dr Yana Taylor, Kym Vercoe as the artists.

EMMA COX is a Reader in Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her work examines forced migration, memory, and place in theatre, visual culture, and medical culture. Emma’s work has appeared in Theatre Journal, Theatre Research International, and Medical Humanities. Her books include Performing Noncitizenship (2015), Theatre & Migration (2014), and Staging Asylum (2013). She is the co-editor of the major interdisciplinary volume, Refugee Imaginaries: Research Across the Humanities (2020), and contributing editor of Performance and Migration (2021), a video and publishing collaboration.

VICTORIA CARLESS is an award-winning playwright and author. Victoria’s novel for young adults The Dream Walker was nominated for the Queensland Literary Awards and was a Children’s Book Council of Australia Notable book for older readers. Her book for middle grade readers, Gus and The Starlight, was shortlisted for best children’s fiction in the Aurealis Awards. Lani and the Universe is her latest book for middle grade readers, which celebrates the magic in nature, science and in our every day. Victoria is also a playwright with seven plays produced since 2006. The Rainbow Dark was awarded the Queensland Theatre Company’s George Landen Dann Award for young playwrights. Victoria was commissioned to write a work for the Museum of Brisbane’s Storytellers exhibition and her novella about a soldier deserting in World War 1 was published in Griffith Review's novella edition. She received a State Library of Queensland QANZAC Fellowship to research the project. Victoria has a PhD in Creative Writing and previously taught creative arts and writing at university level. She regularly delivers author talks and workshops in schools and her favourite time of year is the Children's Book Council of Australia Book Week.

Catherine Simmonds is the founder of Brunswick Women's Theatre, guiding its growth as artistic director and writer of several major projects and productions since 1991. In 2001 Catherine received a two year professional development Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts to study in Brazil and Italy.

BEN ELTHAM is a writer, journalist and trade unionist based in Melbourne. He is best-known for his non-fiction, criticism and essays about Australian politics and culture. Ben teaches in the School of Media, Film and Journalism at Monash University.

LINDA JAIVIN is a novelist, journalist, translator and author of non-fiction and occasional playwright. Her plays, the full-length Seeking Djira and the short Halal el Mashakel have been  performed in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Wollongong, Newcastle and the Adelaide Fringe. She is a cultural commentator, essayist and the internationally published author of thirteen books, including seven novels, with the latest out in mid-2025. She is also the author of an unproduced libretto about the journey of an asylum seeker to Australia, A Better Life, for which she won a Varuna/Playworks fellowship and for which Ed Kuepper composed a portion of the music, and another, bilingual libretto, Passion, that blends western and Peking Opera, completed in collaboration with the National Peking Opera Company of China with scoring by Zhu Shaoyu. Passion has only ever been produced in part.
