EMILY STEEL is originally from Wales and has lived in Adelaide since 2010. As a playwright, her recent work includes: Euphoria (Country Arts SA/State Theatre Company SA; Community and Youth Theatre Award, AWGIES 2022; touring nationally in 2023), How Not To Make It In America (Theatre Republic), 19 weeks (Jill Blewett Playwright’s Award, Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature 2018; Best Theatre Award, Adelaide Fringe 2017; toured nationally), and Impersonal Space (with Company AT; DreamBIG children’s festival and regional tour). Her audio plays include: 19 weeks (Audio Award, AWGIES 2019; finalist for Best Original Single Drama, BBC Audio Drama Awards 2019), Frank and the Bear, Bite and Boom Boom, all produced by BBC Cymru Wales and broadcast on BBC Radio 4. She participated in the 2022 AFTRS Talent Camp at the South Australian Film Corporation, and in the 2020 Spark TV writing workshop. She came up with the original concept and was one of the core writers for State Theatre Company SA/ActNow’s Decameron 2.0 project, which put 100 new monologues on YouTube during the 2020 lockdown (Best Work Outside a Festival, Ruby Awards 2021). She also directed and produced a filmed version of 19 weeks. She has taught playwriting at the University of Adelaide and the Adelaide College of the Arts, mentored young writers for ATYP, Carclew and Helpmann, led writing workshops in schools and worked with Country Arts SA in regional communities. She trained as an actor at the Oxford School of Drama and completed the Writers’ Programme at the Royal Court Theatre, London. She has a BA (Honours) in English Language and Literature from Oxford University and MSc (Distinction) in Science, Medicine, Technology and Society from University College London/Imperial College London. She is currently working on The Garden for Theatre Republic, and Housework, a new play about women and politics, commissioned by STCSA and supported by a residency with the Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts at Flinders University.
